The William Blake Tarot of the Creative Imagination by Ed Buryn
Art by William Blake
Publisher: REDFeather

Review time!

I was so excited to receive this deck. This has long been on my wish list.

William Blake Tarot is a RedFeather Deck by Ed Buryn.  It’s a beautifully made box, as always. This one feels a little sturdier than most.

It was fun to dive into this deck of 79 cards. Yes, I know, Tarot has 78 cards, and any more or less is an oracle.  I will let you decide. The extra card in this deck is the 00 card representing Eternity. I do like this card and its meaning; “powerful creative or spiritual realization.” Yes, in my opinion, this card works in this deck.

The cards are a reimagining of William Blake’s art. There have been small tweaks in colours and some minor changes in the artwork to sharpen the images and all the detail that is so important in the tarot deck.

The cards themselves are beautiful with gold foil edges. They are a little stiff and stuck together at first, which is common with all gilded edges, so it is not unexpected.

Looking through the cards I was surprised to find that Major Arcana had been retitled.  For example, instead of The Magician, we have Magic.  Instead of The Empress, we have Nature and so forth. It goes through the Majors.

The Minor Arcana brought another surprise as the suits have been reimagined. Painting is Water or Cups, Science is Air or Swords, Music is Fire or Wands, and Poetry is Earth or Pentacles. Each of the Minor cards also has a keyword on the card.  So Ace of Poetry is Inspiration. The Pages of the Minor Arcana become Angels, and the Knights become Child. The Queen and King are Woman and Man.

Included in the book are a few spreads to try.  I tried the Four Fold Vision Spread. This is a five-card spread. The first card represents the problem or issue. I pulled the Ten of Painting with the keyword “elight,” work or ideals take on a life of their own. Financial prosperity, physical well-being.

The second card represents seeing with your eyes. The facts before you.  One dimensional. I pulled the Seven of Poetry with the keyword “oldness,” standing up for myself and my beliefs, and being truthful.  Tests of integrity, firmness, and commitment. Doing the right thing.

The third card represents the mind’s eye. I pulled the Eight of Painting with the keyword “iscipline,”  Discipline at work, getting a grip on things, and self-improvement.

The fourth card represents seeing creatively. Thought in emotional form and values and standards times two. I pulled the Twelve card entitled “eversals,” similar to The Hanged Man. This card reveals a need to look at things in a different and new way. Brainstorming and searching for solutions.

The final card represents seeing through God’s eye. Mystical perspective and potential experience. This card was the Child of Music. As I pulled this card, I realized that there was no keyword on the “ourt cards.”  In the RWS this would be Knight of Wands. A need to kindle your emotions and get in touch with your feelings. Keeping feelings to myself. Finding and marching to my own rhythm.

In summary, it is a reading that makes sense to me. Work taking on a life of its own. Well, show season starts soon, and integrity is being tested; well, we will see.  Brainstorming is something that needs to happen at the start of every project I do. A time to get in touch with my feelings. Absolutely! In the end, I feel like I am being led to get ready; life is changing. I will have decisions to make, and I need to think things through and possibly change my attitude. But as always, be true to myself.

I feel like this deck reads well; you would have to read the book and be able to listen to how it speaks to you. I have not used this one with a client yet, so let’s have some fun.
